ICT का अर्थ
ICT — Information and Communication Technology
| Research Stage | ICT Application |
|---|---|
| Problem identification | Emerging topics, reports, research gaps |
| Literature review | E-databases, e-journals, repositories |
| Research design | Online planning, sample-size calculation |
| Tool development | Digital questionnaire, online scales |
| Data collection | Google Forms, online interviews, sensors |
| Data storage | Cloud storage, databases, spreadsheets |
| Data analysis | SPSS, R, Python, NVivo |
| Referencing | Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote |
| Writing | Word processor, LaTeX, collaborative tools |
| Plagiarism checking | Turnitin, iThenticate |
| Publication | Online journal submission systems |
| Dissemination | Repositories, conferences, academic networks |
Most Important Exam Point: ICT is useful at almost all stages of research.
- Emerging research topics
- Research gaps
Example: Researcher "Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education" पर काम करना चाहता है।
- Digital Sources: Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, PubMed, JSTOR, Shodhganga, INFLIBNET, Institutional repositories, E-journals, E-books, Government databases
Boolean Operators:
| Operator | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| AND | Both terms required | ICT AND research |
| OR | Either term | adolescent OR teenager |
| NOT | Exclude term | technology NOT medicine |
| " " | Exact phrase | "research ethics" |
| * | Word variations | educat* |
Exam Trap: AND search narrows; OR search broadens.
Digital Libraries and Repositories
- Digital Library: Organised digital collection of e-books, articles, theses, reports, multimedia
- Institutional Repository: Digital archive of institution's scholarly output
- Shodhganga: Indian universities' theses and dissertations digital repository (maintained by INFLIBNET Centre)
- Shodhgangotri: Approved research synopses/research-in-progress repository
Online Data Collection
- Google Forms/Microsoft Forms, Online questionnaires, Email surveys, Mobile applications, Online interviews, Video conferencing, Digital focus groups, Online experiments, Social-media data, Sensors and wearable devices, LMS logs
Advantages: Wider coverage, automatic data entry, cost saving, real-time responses, remote participants, skip logic, multimedia questions
Limitations: Digital divide, Internet access inequality, self-selection bias, representativeness issues, multiple/false responses, low response rate, privacy/data-security risk, identity verification difficult, informed consent neglect
Data Storage and Management
- Means: Spreadsheets, Relational databases, Encrypted drives, Institutional servers, Cloud storage, Data repositories
- Good Practices: Password protection, Encryption, Regular backup, Version control, File-naming convention, Access control, Data dictionary, De-identification, Retention & deletion policy
- Tools: Microsoft Excel, SPSS, R, Python, SAS, Stata, Jamovi, PSPP
- Applications: Data cleaning, Coding, Frequency/percentage, Mean/median/mode, Standard deviation, Correlation, t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square, Regression, Graphs/visualisation
- Tools: NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA, QDA Miner
- Uses: Interview transcription organisation, Coding, Categories, Theme identification, Text searching, Memos, Audio-video data management, Relationship visualisation
Reference Management
- Tools: Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, RefWorks
- Functions: References import/store, PDFs organise, Notes/tags, In-text citations, Bibliography generate, APA/MLA/Chicago style change, Duplicate identification, Collaborative library
| Tool Type | Examples | Main Function |
|---|---|---|
| Reference manager | Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote | Citations and bibliography |
| Plagiarism checker | Turnitin, iThenticate | Textual similarity |
| Statistical software | SPSS, R, Stata | Quantitative analysis |
| Qualitative software | NVivo, ATLAS.ti | Coding and thematic analysis |
Exam Trap: EndNote reference-management software है; Turnitin plagiarism/similarity-detection system है।
Thesis and Article Writing में ICT
- Word processing, Spell/grammar checking, Tables/figures, Automatic table of contents, Citation insertion, Collaborative editing, Track changes, Cloud-based version management, LaTeX typesetting, Journal templates, Similarity checking
- Common Tools: Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, LaTeX/Overleaf, Grammarly, Reference managers
Research Communication and Collaboration
- Email communication, Video conferencing, Shared documents, International collaboration, Virtual seminars/webinars, Online conferences, Collaborative datasets, Preprints/repositories, Research profiles
- Academic Visibility Platforms: ORCID, Google Scholar Profile, Institutional profile, Research repositories
Publication and Dissemination में ICT
- Online journal submission, Manuscript tracking, Electronic peer review, E-journal publication, Institutional repository deposit, Open-access dissemination, Citation tracking, Altmetrics, Online conference presentation
- Digital divide
- Unequal access
- Information overload
- Predatory journals
- Fake or unreliable information
- Privacy breach
- Cybersecurity risks
- Software dependence
- Algorithmic bias
- Data manipulation
- Plagiarism और contract cheating
- AI-generated misinformation
- Copyright violation
- Long-term digital preservation
Research Ethics
- Academic integrity
Core Principles of Research Ethics
- Respect for Persons/Autonomy: Participant का voluntary decision right
- Beneficence: Possible benefits maximised
- Non-maleficence: Do no harm — physical, psychological, social, economic, reputational harm minimised
- Justice: Fair distribution of burden and benefit
- Honesty: Truthful reporting of data, method, findings
- Objectivity: Control/disclose personal bias and conflict of interest
- Integrity: Consistency and ethical commitment
- Accountability: Responsible for decisions, data, reporting
- Transparency: Clear method, limitations, funding, conflict of interest
- Confidentiality and Privacy: Protect participant information
Informed Consent
- To be told: Purpose, Procedures, Duration, Risks, Benefits, Confidentiality, Voluntary participation, Withdrawal right, Contact details, Data use
- Invalid when: Incomplete information, Coercion/undue pressure, Language not understood, Participant not legally capable, Only formal signature without real understanding
- Vulnerable Participants: Children, Limited decision-making capacity, Prisoners, Economically dependent, Researcher's own students/employees, Seriously ill — additional safeguards needed
Privacy, Anonymity and Confidentiality
| Concept | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Privacy | Personal information पर participant का control |
| Anonymity | Identity linked/known
Research Misconduct: FFP
- Fabrication: Making up data that was not actually collected. Example: Reporting 200 responses when only 120 collected, creating remaining responses.
- Falsification: Manipulating, altering or omitting existing data/process. Example: Deleting inconvenient observations to support hypothesis.
- Plagiarism: Using others' words, ideas, data or work without proper credit.
Plagiarism
- Direct plagiarism
- Mosaic/patchwork plagiarism
- Inadequate paraphrasing
- Idea plagiarism
- Data/image plagiarism
- Source plagiarism
- Accidental plagiarism
Prevention: Proper citation, Quotation marks, Genuine paraphrasing with citation, Reference list, Original notes, Figures/tables source, Similarity report careful interpretation
Publication Ethics
- Duplicate Publication: Same research substantially same form in multiple journals
- Simultaneous Submission: Same manuscript to multiple journals at once
- Salami Slicing: Unnecessarily dividing one integrated study into small papers
- Selective Reporting: Only favourable/significant results reported
- Citation Manipulation: Adding irrelevant citations to increase count
- Conflict of Interest: Personal/professional/financial interest affecting research judgement — must be disclosed and managed, not hidden
Ethical Review Committee
- Human participants studies generally require appropriate ethics committee/IEC/IRB approval
- Committee checks: Risk–benefit balance, Informed consent process, Participant selection, Privacy/confidentiality, Vulnerable groups protection, Data management plan, Compensation and withdrawal rights
Deception
- Limited deception may be justified only when: Scientific justification, Minimal risk, No suitable alternative, Ethics approval obtained, Debriefing provided, Participant has data withdrawal opportunity
ICT and Digital Research Ethics
- Online informed consent
- Social-media data privacy
- Data ownership
- Cybersecurity
- Cloud storage jurisdiction
- Facial/biometric data
- Re-identification risk
- Algorithmic bias
- Digital surveillance
- Copyright/licensing
- Terms of service
- Digital divide
- Automated decision-making
Artificial Intelligence in Research
- AI can assist: Keyword generation, Literature discovery, Language improvement, Coding suggestions, Data visualisation, Transcription, Programming assistance, Preliminary summaries
- Ethical Risks: False/hallucinated references, Biased output, Confidential data leakage, Undisclosed AI-generated text, Fabricated interpretation, Copyright concerns, Overdependence, Lack of accountability
Right Approach: Verify AI output, Read and cite original sources, Do NOT upload confidential/unpublished participant data to public AI systems, Follow journal/institution AI-disclosure policy, Do NOT treat AI as author, Avoid fabricated citations/data.
ICT: Benefit और Ethical Risk
| ICT Application | Benefit | Ethical/Methodological Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Online survey | Wider reach | Biased sample, privacy |
| Cloud storage | Easy access | Data breach |
| Statistical software | Fast analysis | Wrong test/interpretation |
| Plagiarism checker | Similarity detection | False assumption that similarity equals plagiarism |
| AI tool | Speed and assistance | Hallucination, bias, data leakage |
| Social-media data | Large natural dataset | Consent and contextual privacy |
| Reference manager | Accurate formatting | Imported metadata errors |
| Online publication | Wider dissemination | Predatory journals |
